A naked man, armed with a gun, rammed his car into a gate at a police station in northeast Houston in the early hours of this morning and fired at least one shot before officers shot and killed him.
Tony Wayne Johnson, 29, died outside the Northeast Patrol Station on Ley Road at about 2:40 a.m., police spokesman John Cannon said.
Ten minutes earlier, police received reports of a man in a white Mitsubishi Mirage driving erratically and waving a gun around the U.S. 59 and 610 Loop interchange.
The man then drove to the station and smashed into a gate at the entrance to the parking lot where officers park their private vehicles.
He tried smashing through a second gate and then drove into a car at the secure entrance where prisoners are processed.
He got out of the car with a 9-mm handgun and threatened officers, firing at least one shot.
“That’s when six officers fired at him,” Cannon said.
The motive for the man’s behavior is unclear.
An autopsy and toxicology tests will be conducted by Harris County medical examiner’s office.
Police are looking in to whether the man had any connections with people in custody at the police station.
The officers involved in the shooting were Kevin D. Eichman, 35; Nativida G. Tovar III, 41; Domingo Villarreal Jr., 23; Edward T. Fendia, 31; Darrell K. Marshall, 46; and Thomas M. Reese, 46. They have been placed on administrative leave for up to three days.
