A man from upstate New York today admitted in court he stuffed his 98-year-old dead mother in a freezer so he could keep cashing her Social Security checks.

Rosland Auslander pleaded guilty in Sullivan County court, Monticello, to grand larceny and forgery charges.

State police discovered Herta Auslander’s body in a freezer last October after a tip off that she had died more than a year earlier. An autopsy concluded she died of natural causes.

Prosecutors say her 69-year-old son kept his mother in the freezer for at least 18 months at his home in the hamlet of Cooks Falls, about 100 miles northwest of New York City.

After eluding capture for months, Auslander was arrested at his home in March. He could face up to seven years in prison when he is sentenced in October.
