Kiefer Sutherland, the star of the TV series 24, was charged with misdemeanor assault today for allegedly head-butting a fashion designer at a Manhattan nightclub.
Sutherland, 42, reported to a lower Manhattan police station where was questioned, given a ticket, ordered to appear in court on June 22 and released on his own recognizance.
Jack McCollough, designer of the Proenza Schouler fashion house, claims Sutherland attacked him after an argument, leaving him with a cut on his face. The incident happened about 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
Detectives were planning to question actress Brooke Shields. She was as a witness at the trendy SoHo nightspot SubMercer, in the basement of the Mercer Hotel, where the altercation took place.
The case could pose another legal problem for Sutherland. He is still on probation for a drunken-driving charge in California last year. Sutherland served 48 days in jail.
No decision has been made on whether the assault charge will affect Sutherland’s probation, said Frank Mateljan, a spokesman for the Los Angeles City Attorney.
Sutherland’s no-nonsense portrayal of counterterrorism agent Jack Bauer has made Bauer an iconic TV character and won Sutherland Golden Globe and Emmy awards for best actor.
