The reigning Miss California USA, Carrie Prejean, can keep her title even though she failed to disclose that she had posed in her underwear as a teenager.
The announcement was made today by pageant owner Donald Trump at New York’s Trump Tower. Prejean appeared at his side.
Trump also defended Prejean over the answer she gave at last month’s Miss USA pageant when she told contest judge Perez Hilton, real name Mario Lavandeira, she believes marriage is between a man and a woman.
“It’s the same answer the president of the United States gave; it’s the same answer many people gave,” Trump said. “She gave an honorable answer; she gave an answer from her heart.”
Trump said he and other pageant officials had reviewed racy photos of Prejean and decided they were acceptable.
“We are in the 21st century,” he said. “We have determined the pictures taken are fine.”
The 21-year-old Prejean told reporters she had received thousands of letters and e-mails from people supporting her and said, about the marriage question, that Hilton had asked her a “politically charged question with a hidden personal agenda”.
“I stated my honest belief,” she said.
Hilton runs a celebrity scuttlebutt Web site that has elevated him to celebrity status; such is the way of the world.
Rolling Stone magazine called him “the queen of mean” and “the most hated man in Hollywood”. But hey, it makes him a living.
Now whether it can be called an honest living is in the eye of the beholder.
In a world of supply and demand, Hilton simply supplies what seven million visitors to his Web site demand each day. Not bad for a tub of lard from Miami, with a BA in drama.
