A California boy may be left permanently blinded after his father bit out one of his eyes and mutilated the other.
Angel Vidal Mendoza, 34, of Bakersfield is due in court tomorrow to face charges of mayhem, torture and child cruelty following the attack on April 28.
Bakersfield police say Mendoza appeared to be under the influence of the drug PCP when he attacked the boy.
After the attack, Mendoza left his apartment in his wheelchair and entered the backyard of a nearby home and began hacking at his legs with an ax.
Four-year-old Angelo Mendoza Jr. told police, “My daddy ate my eyes.”
Doctors at Mercy Hospital do not yet know whether Angelo will regain vision in his right eye.
The boy’s mother, Desirae Marie Bermudez, 23, was not present during the incident.
According to court documents, there is a $15,000 warrant for her arrest for failing to complete a drug treatment program in late 2008.
