A woman who set herself on fire at a Miami mall last week died in hospital yesterday.
Cecilia E. Casals, 42, of North Miami Beach, sustained third-degree burns to 75 percent of her body after pouring a flammable liquid over herself and setting it on fire outside the Savage Boutique store in the Mall of the Americas.
Ablaze, she walked through the mall and out to the parking lot.
“She looked like a human torch, on fire from head to toe,” said Santiago Castro, who manages a travel agency inside the mall.
Three people, including Castro, followed her and put out the flames with fire extinguishers.
Casals died at Jackson Memorial Hospital, said Detective Roy Rutland, a Miami-Dade police spokesman.
According to court records, and her husband, Casals had a history of mental illness and had been convicted of trafficking prescription drugs.
