Female science teacher charged with sexual assault involving student

By Calvin Palmer

A Texas teacher’s former husband alerted authorities to her relationship with a student and being charged with sexual assault.

Deanna Higgins, 27, a science teacher at Spring High School since January 2008 was charged yesterday with one count of sexual assault of a child and one count of having an improper relationship between an educator and a student.

Her ex-husband discovered incriminating text messages on a phone the defendant gave their eight-year-old son and notified school district officials. Higgins was was placed on paid administrative leave in January.

The school principal, Donna Ullrich, sent a letter out to parents today concerning the charges against Higgins and also confirmed rumors that a second teacher is on leave and under investigation for a separate issue.

“Inappropriate behavior with our students will never be tolerated or overlooked,” Ullrich said in the letter, noting that officials check criminal histories and references of all job applicants.

I don’t think there is a single high school boy in America who would consider this “assault.”
