A Delaware pediatrician is facing multiple charges of child rape and sexual abuse in what has been described as the worst case of pedophilia in U.S. history.
Earl Bradley, 56, was indicted yesterday by a Sussex County grand jury on 471 counts of sexually assaulting and molesting 102 girls and one boy who visited him as patients at his Baybees pediatric office in Lewes, Delaware. The alleged offenses date from 1998.
The charges include first-degree and second-degree rape, unlawful sexual contact, sexual exploitation of a child and continuing sexual abuse of a child.
Police said they had been investigating Bradley for a year before they obtained enough evidence to arrest him on December 16, 2009, on charges of raping and exploiting a toddler at his office complex.
Bradley posted $36,000 bail and was released. He was arrested again on December 18, after police obtained a search warrant and discovered numerous computer files containing videos alleged to show the 6-foot, 225-pound Bradley raping and abusing patients ranging in age from 3 months to 13 years.
Delaware’s Attorney General Beau Biden said the investigation was continuing and he expected more cases to be uncovered.
Biden described the case as “unique” in the state’s history. He added: “I know of no other that has this many victims in US history.”
Biden’s office has faced questions over why reports about Bradley in 2005 were not passed along to the state’s professional regulation official or the Board of Medical Practice.
He has ordered an investigation into whether mistakes were made that allowed Bradley to continue practicing after parent complaints.
Bradley is being held on bail set at $2.9 million. A court date has not yet been set.
