Charges are pending after a woman driver ran over and killed a four-year-old girl from Britain yesterday on Daytona Beach, Florida.
Ellie Louise Bland was walking on the sand with her uncle about 3:00 p.m. when she stepped in front of a Lincoln Town Car driven by Barbara Worley, 66, of Elberton, Georgia, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Worley hit the youngster and onlookers yelled at her to stop. She did but then panicked, hit the accelerator and ran over the girl, investigators said.
Ellie, from Nottingham, England, is believed to have been on holiday with her family.
Driving is allowed on the sands of Daytona Beach. Motorists are advised to watch out for pedestrians, sunbathers and wildlife.
Last year, two 16-year-old girls received minor injuries when they were run over while sunbathing.
In 2006, a man accidentally hit his wife with their car and beach patrol officer seriously hurt a 21-year-old woman when he drove over her while trying to warn swimmers of rip currents.
