A 17-year-old British girl is in a critical condition in hospital after falling seven floors from a balcony on the holiday island of Majorca.
Grace Ford was visiting the island with a group of sixth-from friends from Kirkham Grammar School, Lancashire, England, when she fell from the balcony in an apartment block in Magaluf in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Ford broke both her legs and her pelvis when she fell from the balcony and is being treated at the Son Dureta Hospital in Palma. Her family is with her.
Edward Soppet, 18, of Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, was arrested for failing to report an accident after Ford was found lying on the ground below the apartment. He has since been released without charge.
A police source said: “Our investigation revolves around how it came to be that the young man went back to sleep in his bed after the young woman fell from seven storys up.
“He was still asleep in bed when our officers arrived.
“She was in a very bad way when we found her and needed two pints of blood in a transfusion.
“It is a terribly sad story, especially for the relatives of the young woman.”
Douglas Walker, headmaster of the fee-paying Kirkham Grammar School where Ford had just completed her A-Level studies, learned of the incident today.
“All those who have learnt of this awful accident are thinking of her and her family at this extremely difficult time,” Walker said.
A Foreign Office spokesperson said officials were in touch with Ford’s family and were providing consular assistance.
